Max McNown gets thoughtful about the one piece of advice he keeps at the front of his mind: a line he credits to Rick Rubin, that the best thing you can do for your fans is write music for yourself. He admits how tempting it is to chase the hookiest line and the biggest hit, and how that's usually exactly the song that doesn't connect. He also reflects on how the pressure has changed, when he wrote his first album and his second, Night Diving, he'd never played a single show and none of his music was out in the world yet. Now, 300-plus shows in, the pressure is a whole different obstacle.
